Darth Vader - daddy movie moments

The Best Daddy Movie Moments of All Time

As we get closer and closer to father’s day we take a look back at some of the very greatest daddy movie moments of all time.

Our selection features everything from comedy gold to the tear-jerking and terrifying, showing us as many a father will tell you, it’s not easy being a dad.

Darth Vader – Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

No daddy movie blog would be complete without including the biggest cinematic reveal of all time.

After battling his way through the galaxy, helping the rebels and training to become the greatest Jedi that ever-lived, Luke Skywalker’s world was torn apart by one timeless and unforgettable line.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: “Luke. . . I am your father!”

George Banks – Father of the Bride

The ultimate daddy movie moment of all time is basically the entire script of Father of The Bride.

Watching the loveable, yet clueless, George Banks lose his mind slowly throughout the film is daddy movie gold.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: The father-daughter game of hoops in the family home, before Annie’s wedding. Sob.

Indiana Jones – The Last Crusade

You wouldn’t think a man like Indy had to worry about proving himself to anyone, but in Indiana Jones The Last Crusade, we watch him squirm trying to impress his dear old dad.

Who could compare to Sean Connery though, right? It’s rumoured that Connery only accepted the role if his character could be bigger and better than Indy’s. He told Spielberg;

“whatever Indy’s done my character has done and my character has done it better”

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Indy realises he and his father slept with the same woman.

Ew! That’s a father-son rivalry if ever we’ve seen one.

Chris Gardener – The Pursuit of Happyness

From funny daddy movies to the most heart-wrenching one you’ll ever see. This epic biographical film shows us what one man can, and will do for his child.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: when Chris realises, he is crushing the dreams of his son

“Don’t ever let someone tell you, you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you got to protect it.”

Very inspiring stuff.

Bryan Mills – Taken

Now every father knows he would go the ends of the earth and back for his children so, when Bryan Mills’ daughter is taken, he literally traverses the globe to find her.

Leaving a path of bloody destruction in his wake.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: when Mills talks to his daughters’ kidnappers.

Chilling.

Noah Levenstein – the American Pie’s

Jim’s dad, what a guy. Always ready to take on every parenting situation with gusto and a sage bit of advice.

In the first American Pie, Jim listens to his dad’s life experiences cringing but, by the end of the franchise he realises his dad’s wise words have helped shape who he is, and it’s all “perfectly normal”.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: Jim’s dad explaining all the different types of lad mags there are in the world, in great detail.

Rick O’Connell – The Mummy Returns

When your mum is a reincarnated Egyptian princess and your dads a warrior for god, things are bound to get a bit hairy from time to time.

However, facing life-threatening situations on the regular is a walk in the park for Rick O’Connell, action dad extraordinaire.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: O’Connell sprinting across a lost oasis, son in tow, to save him from being sucked to death by a cursed bracelet.

Peter, Jack and Steve – Three Men and a Baby

Perhaps the most classic daddy movie ever made, Three Men and a Baby lets us see how three very different guys would go about handling fatherhood.

Regardless of their own life-skills, each guy struggles in different ways, highlighting just how challenging one little baby girl can be.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When the guys all sing the baby’s goodnight song in perfect harmony.

Harry, Sam and Bill – Mamma Mia

Another threesome of father figures in this next amazing daddy movie.

Technically Mamma Mia showcases some of the best mom movie moments, but we have to give props to the father figures that are really the focus of the film.

Each one of the dads in Mamma Mia makes up a part of Sophie’s character, making it impossible to know which her biological father is.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When they all stand up in church to give Sophie away, each one accepting a portion of their potential daughter.

Michael Newman – Click

Not many Adam Sandler movies can make us laugh as hard as we cry but, Click is one of those rare films that does both.

We laughed hard when Sandler mounted his bosses’ desk to break wind his face, but we teared up when he runs into the road in the rain after his kids and collapses.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: The ending. We can’t tell you though, because it’s a spoiler!

Mufasa – The Lion King

The ultimate must-see daddy movie, The Lion King, showcases a father-son relationship cut short.

In one of the most saddening Disney movie scenes ever, Simba finds his dad, at the bottom of the ravine after being trampled by a wildebeest stampede.

via GIPHY

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Mufasa gives Simba a noogie and they play in the grass, before having the talk about the kings of the past.

That’s heartwarming stuff right there.

Dr Evil – Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

After freezing his “little soldiers” before his last trip into space, Dr Evil’s team of loyal henchman created an heir to his empire, in case he should not return.

Of course, that heir turned out to be a petulant teenager with some serious daddy abandonment issues.

via GIPHY

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Dr Evil tries to relate to his son doing what we can only assume is the Macarena?

Dr Harvey – Casper

Not one you’d think of right away, but the dad in Casper is a pretty good example of a fabulous father . . . eventually.

Let’s be fair, a skint single dad, raising his daughter whilst searching for the lost soul of his deceased wife. That’s a tough job if you ask us.

Throw in a couple of mischievous spectres and you some of the biggest fatherhood challenges known to man.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Cat’s dad suggests making her Halloween costume! Aw cute and clueless at the same time.

Daniel Hillard – Mrs Doubtfire

And the best dad from any daddy movie ever made goes to, Daniel Hillard (aka Robin Williams) in Mrs Doubtfire.

We don’t know any man who would dress up in drag daily, heels and all, just to spend more time with his kids.

via GIPHY

Our favourite daddy movie moment: Dancing on the table at the house party that breaks the marriage.

Jack Byrnes – Meet the Parents

There’s always been a sense of dread when it comes to meeting your other halves parents, none more deserved than when Greg Focker meet the parents of Pam.

Robert De Niro’s character, Jack Byrnes, is by far the most intimidating father figures in all movie history. Giving Don Corleone a run for his money.

via GIPHY

Our favourite daddy movie moment: The lie detector. Who doesn’t see their own dad doing this if they could?

Papa – A Little Princess

Another weepy one now, but perhaps the greatest daughter and daddy movie ever made.

When little Sarah has to enrol in Ms Minchin’s boarding school for girls, she struggles to let her papa go to war, as would any young girl.

The real pain and anguish come through when her father goes MIA and Sarah is forced into servitude.

via GIPHY

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Sarah’s father returns to the school to adopt Sarah’s friend, the other servant girl, Becky. Gush.

Charlie Swan – Twilight Franchise

As far as understanding fathers go, Charlie Swan is the winner in our eyes.

Who else would put up with Bella’s sad face for the first three movies for one.

And two, how cool do you have to be to see a werewolf materialise before you and not run screaming for the hills?

Our favourite daddy movie moment: The wedding speech when Charlie warns Edward subtly that because he’s a cop he knows how to hunt someone to the ends of the earth.

Forest – Forest Gump

An obvious epic, and one with so many amazing relationships throughout. But none are more touching than that of big and little Forest.

It’s hard to see when watching Forest Gump, a happy ending to such an emotional rollercoaster of a film, but when Forest finds out he’s a daddy, it’s the cherry on the cake.

via GIPHY

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When big Forest learns little Forest is his son and the first thing he asks is “Is he smart?”. Pass us the tissues.

Sonny – Big Daddy

Another Sandler special now, this time with fewer tears and more laughs. A real feel-good film, Big Daddy watches one man become a responsible father against all the odds.

Raising 5-year-old orphan, Julian, as his own, Sandler imparts all his wisdom and some of his worst habits onto the child. Along the way turning his, and Julian’s lives around.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Sandler teaches the kid how to apply a sleeper hold.

Essential parenting 101 if you ask us

Marlin – Finding Nemo

It’s not every father that would take on three sharks, ride sea turtles, swim through an army of jellyfish and get swallowed by a whale to find their son, but it didn’t stop Marlin.

This Pixar sensation showcases the struggles every parent faces when it comes to safeguarding their kids.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: Marlin’s desperation to tell Nemo how old sea turtles are whilst stuck inside a whale.

George Banks – Mary Poppins

Now we know George Banks in Mary Poppins isn’t the most popular father figure, but he’s got a few things going for him.

He obviously provides well for his family, I mean check out that swanky London manor house on Cherry Tree Lane, and of course he loves to fly a kite, what more could you need from your dad?

Our favourite daddy movie moment: Convincing himself, and his wife, that he successfully hired the greatest a nanny of all time when in actual fact Mary Poppins simply hired herself.

Brad – Daddy’s Home

Stepparents usually get a bad rep in movies, but Daddy’s Home turns all that around, making Brad (Will Ferrell) the responsible, “boring” stepdad the hero in the end.

Trying to live up to his wife’s ex, played by Mark Walberg to win the kids approval, Brad falls hard and often with some hilarious consequences.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: The motorcycle scene where Ferrell almost runs over the kids, ends up lodged in a wall and Wahlberg uses it the whole thing as a teachable moment.

Bernie Focker – Meet the Fockers

The sequel to Meet the Parents introduces us to Greg’s parents and we simply adore Bernie Focker as a father.

Believing in showering his son with as much love as possible, Bernie is the total opposite to Pam’s father Jack and we couldn’t love him more for it.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: Trying to up his macho, for Greg’s sake, Bernie tackles Jack in a family football game almost breaking his back. The victory dance is what really makes this scene pop.

Nigel  Powers – Austin Powers: Gold Member

Michael Cane really is the daddy of all British actors and, when he made an appearance as Powers’ dad, Nigel in Gold Member, we were ready for some cinematic gold.

Throughout the film, the daddy movie moments come in thick and fast, from Austin’s obvious rivalry with his dashing dad to the cockney rhyming convo the pair have during Nigel’s rescue.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Nigel reveals he is also Dr Evil’s father and that his real name is Douggie.

Georg von Trapp – Sound Of Music

Another pretty poor example of a father figure makes an appearance in Sound of Music, and if we’re honest we feel for the Von Trapp children and their sad excuse for childhoods.

The turnaround Georg Von Trapp makes from being, Cpt to father is astonishing, and all of it done with the help of a song and a wonderful woman.

Our favourite daddy movie moment: When Cpt von Trapp picks up his guitar and belts out a heartfelt rendition of Edelweiss.

Don Corleone – The Godfather

The head of the family, the daddy of all daddy’s, Don Corleone has the final spot on our best daddy movie moments.

And why not he certainly earned it, building himself a criminal empire and inspiring fear in those he commanded he’s also responsible for some of the greatest daddy movie lines of all time.
