Fantastic Feature Films to Look Out for This Year

At the heart of the city in Liverpool’s most exciting movie theme hotel we are always on the lookout for new and exciting film releases.

This year cinema screens will be featuring superheroes, fantasies, musicals and action so at Arthouse Hotel we thought we’d take a sneak peek at the year of film ahead.

See which of these latest and up and coming release you think will be blockbusters and which will fall into the classics categories over time.

Fantasy and Musicals

Our very own musical movie theme hotel floor has been designed to reflect the most magical musical movies of all time. The rooms include the Wizard of Oz, Chicago and,  of course, the legend that is Mary Poppins.

This year we can look forward to welcoming some amazing magical and musical movies onto the big screen and here are the top three.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

This smash hit musical is one of the most hotly anticipated sequels of all time.

We simply cannot wait to see the younger versions of the much-beloved cast of the first Mamma Mia act out their previous lives.

Revisiting Donna’s youth, meeting a young Tanya and Rosie and seeing Donna and the Dynamos take to the stage is promising to be a smash hit spectacular.

And did we mention Cher will be making a special appearance as well as singing the unforgettable ‘Fernando’.

Forget Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and the God Father Part II, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again promises to be an unforgettable movie sequel experience.

Mary Poppins Returns

And its about time she did, the youth of today need Mary Poppins in their life if only to bring some order to the world.

This time Jane and Michael are all grown up and when Mary visits them and Michaels three children to restore the joy and magic to their lives. During the time of the Great Depression, things are looking bleak for the Banks family and that’s when Mary Poppins arrives to turn things around in the way that only she can.

Poppins is played by our all-time favourite English rose Emily Blunt and Dick Van Dyke returns to the film in the role of Mr Dawes Jr. There’s also an all-star cast including Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep.

We wonder if this long-awaited sequel to such a much loved musical will be a ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ success or if we’ll struggle to ‘Stay Awake’.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Crimes of Grindelwald

We were all devastated when the Harry Potter series was brought to an end, where were we going to get our wizarding movie fix from now!

Enter the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series.

When last we watched Newt Scamander had helped capture the notorious wizard Grindelwald and all was well in the muggle and magic worlds. When we return we learn Grindelwald has escaped and is planning to raise an army of pure blood magical folk to rule over the muggle and magical world.

The cast of this latest magical movie includes the return of the talented Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law will play a handsome Albus Dumbledore and Johnny Depp plays the role of the notorious Grindelwald.

Be prepared for new tricks and treats as we tune in to see what life was like before Harry and Voldemort were at war in this the latest instalment of J.K Rowling captivating’s wizarding world.

Action Heroes and Super Villains

We simply can’t get enough of superheroes and it seems the more the merrier as the people at DC and Marvel continue to bring their printed comic characters to life on the big screen.

Aquaman

As the story goes poor Aquaman has always been the forgotten, somewhat mocked hero of the Justice League and the reason we have been waiting so long for his solo movie is that Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman all had to go first.

Jason Momoa will play Arthur Curry who has lived on land his whole life but can also breathe underwater and talk to sea creatures. He is asked to dive below the waves to inherit an underwater kingdom and battle a long list of villains along the way.

Other cast members include Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother and Amber Heard as Aquaman’s love interest.

Now Aquaman has his own flick this is set to be an under the sea movie that will blow all superhero films that came before out of the water.

Venom

From obscure superhero to the most infamous supervillain ever, Venom could prove to be the darkest Marvel movie made starring one of this generations greatest acting talents as the lead; Tom Hardy.

Fans of the Spidey series and those who are avid Marvel graphic novel readers will be aware of Venom and his origins. But for those who aren’t a brief summary is that Venom is an alien parasitic lifeform that attaches itself to a host giving that person powers and an unhealthy bloodlust and thirst for violence.

It is rumoured that Venom will join the ranks of Logan and Deadpool in the Sony Pictures Universe rather than the Marvel Studios Cinematic Universe where Spidey exists. Quite confusing, yet fans of the comics will fully understand the reasons behind the separation, even if the rest of us don’t.

Despite all the politics and confusion, the movie is poised to be one of the scariest Marvel movies to date with the prospect of many sequels being more than likely.

Other Films to Look Forward Too

There are plenty of other great movies coming out in 2018 and we simply don’t have the time to write about them all but these are the ones that simply shouldn’t be missed.

Jurassic World II – the cast of the last epic instalment return to the dinosaur-infested island to try and save some of the species. Of course, plans will fail, safety measures will be lax and some people might get squashed by big feet or eaten.

Tomb Raider – Despite Ms Jolie doing a superb job back at the turn of the century, Tomb Raider has returned to our screens with a new posh and ponytailed beauty played by Alicia Vikander. The plot stays the same, Lara is trying to find her long-lost adventurer father and gets herself into some perilous predicaments.

Breaking In – The tables are turned in this nail-biting thriller as a young mother takes her kids to a secluded cabin for the weekend and ends up having to rescue them when four men break into the house to find hidden money.
